Jessica Roe tells the story of Southern Sparrow the way it actually happened -- with bottomless mimosas and heels and spa days that slowly gave way to something quieter and harder to schedule. Her closest girlfriends had been inseparable once. Then came the years, and all the lovely things the years bring, and time together became the occasional birthday dinner. Then in 2018 Crazy Rich Asians arrived, and the friend group that had passed the book around went opening weekend together to a theatre that served wine and real food. And somewhere in the cultural moment the film created, they found mahjong. The game gave them back what the years had slowly taken: a reason to sit around a table together for hours, to talk and laugh and be fully present with each other. Jessica fell completely in love with it -- the tiles, the ritual, the way it pulled people into a room and kept them there.
