A Neiman Marcus buyer spotted it at a dinner party. She sold 250 pillows to Neiman Marcus's famous Fortnight celebration in 1973 and hasn't looked back. Mary Ella Gabler grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country, where her grandmother and mother loved textiles -- knotting, crocheting, wrapping beds in antique quilts that had stories woven into every inch. She absorbed all of it and then left for New York, where she built a career on Wall Street in an era when women were rarely in the room at all. Then, in 1971, she found a small patchwork pillow she loved and made one herself. She brought it home. A prominent Neiman Marcus buyer spotted it at a dinner party and told her he needed them in his stores.
She delivered 250 pillows to Neiman Marcus's storied Fortnight celebration in 1973 and Peacock Alley was born. Mary Ella went on to build the first woman-owned, woman-operated multimillion-dollar bedding brand in America -- sourcing the finest long-staple cotton from the world's best mills in Italy and Portugal, sewing every piece in her Dallas workshop by skilled local artisans, and maintaining a standard that has never wavered in over 50 years. She has written an autobiography about the journey. She now runs the company with her two sons, Josh and Jason. Oprah Daily called their Tiffany Cloud bath rug the best bathmat in the history of all bathmats.
