Ojai, California (originally Los Angeles) · Est. 1981 · Founded by Bernd & Debra Dressler (now led by daughters Chelcea & Kirsten Dressler)
Bernd Dressler was born in Germany, raised in Australia, and moved to California in his twenties with a passion for cutlery and a campervan. In 1981 he and his wife Debra launched Messermeister -- knife master, in German -- driving door to door, Debra managing the books, Bernd on the road with two dogs. He partnered with a third-generation knife-making family in Solingen, invented the first truly cambered chef's knife, and built one of the most respected culinary knife brands in America. Today his daughters Chelcea and Kirsten run it. The knives are still hammer-forged the traditional way.
Bernd Dressler knew what a good knife felt like. He was born in Germany, grew up in Australia, moved to California in his twenties, and found his way into cutlery sales -- eventually going to work selling Henckels knives because he spoke the language and understood the craft. By 1981 he had enough experience to know what was missing, and he and his wife Debra started their own company: DAMCO, distributing German and Japanese blades out of a campervan, Bernd on the road with two dogs, Debra handling finances and shipments from home.
He partnered with a third-generation knife-making family in Solingen, Germany -- the city that has been the center of blade-making in Europe for centuries -- and began designing knives that addressed what he'd learned from professional chefs: a need for better function, better balance, better performance. He invented the first bolsterless heel. The first truly cambered chef's knife. The sharpest polished edge angle in the category. By 1984 Messermeister debuted at the Gourmet Housewares Show. By the late 1990s it had been selected by Le Cordon Bleu as their exclusive knife supplier.
Bernd died in 2002. Debra was faced with selling the company or continuing in the spirit of her husband. She kept going. Their daughters Chelcea and Kirsten completed their business degrees in 2004 and joined the company, eventually taking over leadership entirely. Today Messermeister is 100% women-owned and operated from Ojai, California -- one of the few knife companies in the world still producing hot-drop, hammer-forged blades the traditional way, across partner workshops in Germany, Japan, Italy, and Portugal. On a registry, a Messermeister knife is the tool a couple will cook with for the rest of their lives -- and hand down from there.
