New York, NY (foundries in Wisconsin, Indiana & Illinois) · Est. 2016 · Founded by Stephen & Chris Muscarella (brothers)
Stephen and Chris Muscarella grew up with their grandmother's cast iron -- smooth, perfectly balanced 1930s Wagner pans that made every modern skillet feel like a disappointment. When they set out to find something comparable, foundry after foundry told them it couldn't be made that way anymore. They didn't accept that answer. Field Company was born in 2016, named for their grandmother, and built to make cast iron the way it used to be -- only better.
The Muscarella brothers didn't set out to start a company. They set out to answer a question. Growing up, the cast iron pans that came down from their grandmother's kitchen were different from anything they could buy -- lighter, smoother, beautifully balanced, with a seasoned surface that made everything cook better. When they tried to replace them as adults, nothing came close. Modern cast iron was thick, rough, and heavy in all the wrong ways.
They started visiting foundries with one of their grandmother's vintage Wagner pans from the 1930s, asking if anyone could still pour iron that thin. Every foundry said no. Not willing to accept that, they tracked down a whitepaper on thermophysical properties of thin-walled iron castings written by a materials science professor in Europe, emailed him cold, and got on a Skype call. That conversation unlocked everything.
Field Company launched on Kickstarter in 2016 and sold out immediately. Today the skillets, dutch ovens, and carbon steel pans are made entirely in the USA at third-generation family-owned foundries in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Illinois -- sand-cast, hand-finished, and built to last generations. The company is named Field after their grandmother, whose kitchen started all of it. On a registry, a Field skillet is the pan a couple will still be cooking on in forty years.
