Anna Rabinowicz started ANNA New York in 2002 in her grandmother's basement in Queens -- her mother and grandmother hand-finishing the first agate coasters while she designed. A Stanford-trained engineer and Parsons professor with a childhood obsession with minerals, Anna builds objects where natural beauty meets precise craft. The result is the kind of piece that lives on your table for decades.
Anna Rabinowicz grew up going to mineral conventions with her father on weekends in suburban Detroit, coming home with selenite, amethyst, and agate. Years later, as a Stanford-trained product designer with master's degrees in both engineering and art, she rediscovered a piece of agate on a trip to Yosemite and had a single thought: these would make extraordinary coasters.
She founded ANNA New York in 2002 in her grandmother's basement in Queens. It was a matriarchy from day one -- her mother and grandmother hand-finishing each piece, managing shipping, holding the whole thing together. When her grandmother passed, Anna's daughter Talia stepped in. Three generations, one company, still female-owned and operated.
Today ANNA is carried at the MoMA Design Store and has appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. The pieces -- agate, 24K gold, crystal, handcrafted stone -- are what happen when an engineer thinks like an artist. They don't just sit on a table. They anchor a room.
